How Does Rhinoplasty Work?

Undergo a custom treatment plan to address your areas of insecurity and enhance your natural beauty.

Treatment Techniques

Closed Rhinoplasty

Our plastic surgeons frequently perform closed rhinoplasty, which involves two discreet incisions on the inside of the nostrils. Closed rhinoplasty effectively treats cosmetic problems and deviated septums and is less invasive than an open technique. Many patients prefer the closed method as there is less chance of visible scarring with the final results.

Open Rhinoplasty

Open rhinoplasty involves the same incisions inside the nostrils with an additional incision across the tissue that connects the two. This small external incision provides superior visibility and access to the internal structures of the nose. The open technique may be a better option for individuals needing more extensive corrections or cartilage grafts.

The Rhinoplasty Procedure

Rhinoplasty is usually performed on an outpatient basis at our surgical centre, meaning you will be released the very same day to recover at home. The surgery can take anywhere from one to three hours depending on your individual needs and involves the following steps:
Your plastic surgeon will contour your nose based on the technique chosen for your rhinoplasty to achieve the desired aesthetics.
Your plastic surgeon will contour your nose based on the technique chosen for your rhinoplasty to achieve the desired aesthetics.

Anesthesia

We will begin by administering local or general anesthesia to prevent you from feeling pain during surgery. Our team carefully monitors your vitals throughout the procedure to ensure your safety.

Incisions

We create the incisions based on the technique chosen for your nose job and access the targeted treatment areas.

Contouring

Your plastic surgeon will make alternations to achieve the desired aesthetics. This may include removing small amounts of skin, centering the nasal septum, reshaping the bone, or removing cartilage. We may also perform a cartilage graft to fill in a depression or change the angle of the tip.

Finishing Touches

After the nose has been modified, your surgeon will re-drape the skin and close the incisions with fine sutures. We apply packing gauze and a plastic splint over the nose to help maintain the new structure. After you begin to wake from the anesthesia, we'll discharge you to begin your recovery.

Recovering from Rhinoplasty Surgery

Side Effects

Patients may experience temporary numbness as well as minor bleeding, bruising, and dryness of the nose and/or throat immediately after rhinoplasty surgery. Discomfort is usually minimal and can be controlled by using prescribed pain medication as directed. We recommend keeping the head elevated and using cold compresses to reduce swelling.

Bandages

Make sure to follow your surgeon's directions regarding bandages and keep the packing gauze in place for at least two days following your nose job. The splint is typically worn for about a week and can be taken off when the sutures are removed at your follow-up appointment.

Activity

Patients can usually return to light activity a week after rhinoplasty surgery and can go back to school or work within seven to 10 days. However, for three weeks minimum, refrain from strenuous physical activity, including bending and moderate to heavy lifting. After about six weeks, you can return to your normal routine, including regular exercise.

Results

While the effects of your nose job will be visible after the swelling and bruising begin to subside, it can take some time for the final results to settle in. Everyone heals differently, and it may take some individuals up to a year to completely recover. However, once this period has passed, the effects are permanent and can be enjoyed for a lifetime.
