Ear Sculpting (Otoplasty) for Adults and Children
Ear sculpting (otoplasty) is a surgical procedure that can reshape or reposition the ears. In our state-of-the-art facility in Halifax, NS, our doctors can use advanced techniques to create pleasing results for both cosmetic and reconstructive ear surgery procedures. Both children and adults can benefit from otoplasty, which can improve aesthetics and boost self-confidence.
What is Ear Sculpting?
Ear sculpting can be either a reconstructive or cosmetic surgery. It can serve to correct defects present from birth or defects caused by injury. When performed for cosmetic purposes, Drs. Richard Bendor-Samuel and Louis Boileau can reposition protruding ears closer to the head or make other changes to the size and shape.
Who is a Candidate for Otoplasty?
Both cosmetic and reconstructive otoplasty is appropriate for children and adults. Children as young as five or six (or whenever the ears are fully developed) can undergo ear sculpting to correct defects or to address overly large or protruding ears. Most adults who choose to undergo ear sculpting do so either to correct defects caused by injuries, correct previous unsatisfactory surgical results, or because they did not have surgery as a child to address defects.
Otoplasty Techniques
Adults generally undergo otoplasty with only a local anesthetic and a sedative. Children, on the other hand, typically require general anesthesia. After administering the anesthesia, our doctors create an incision behind the ear. This exposes the cartilage, which can be carefully reshaped to improve aesthetics. When necessary, we can position the ear closer to the head to minimize protrusion.
Some common techniques we may use during an ear sculpting procedure include:
- Cartilage Scoring, which involves incisions in the cartilage itself to reposition, remove, or add tissue.
- Cartilage Sparing, which utilizes sutures to change ear positioning and shape.
Recovery
The entire procedure typically takes one to two hours to complete. It is performed on an outpatient basis, so you can return home soon after surgery. You may experience some swelling and discomfort for a few days. This is normal, but we can provide you with pain medication to minimize your discomfort.
Whether we are treating a five-year-old child or a 30-year-old adult, we have the experience to meet each patient’s needs.
You can shower the day after surgery, but you should keep your head dry for up to 10 days (or until your sutures are removed). Most patients need a full week to recover after otoplasty. You should limit strenuous exercises and activities for a couple weeks. Patients should avoid contact sports for a full three to six months after surgery to avoid injury.
