Smooth and Repair Your Skin with Scar Revision and Mole Removal Procedures
Many people wish to remove scars, moles, and other skin blemishes. In some cases, moles prove cancerous and must be removed as soon as possible. Fortunately there are a number of effective treatment options for these skin imperfections. Mole removal and scar revision surgery are available in Halifax, Nova Scotia at The Landings Surgical Centre. As one of the leading practices in the area, we have helped countless patients address unwanted moles, lesions, and scars.
Mole Removal
Mole removal is a relatively minor, but undeniably important, procedure. Most moles are harmless, but occasionally moles can be cancerous. If you have a mole that changes in size, shape, or color, or one that bleeds, itches, or becomes painful, it should be examined as soon as possible by a medical professional to determine whether you have skin cancer. It may also be appropriate to visit us for mole removal purely for cosmetic reasons if you consider your mole unattractive.
If the mole protrudes from the skin, a shave excision may be the best treatment. After applying anesthetic, our surgeons simply shave the mole away with a scalpel. In most cases a small white mark is left after healing, but the mole's color occasionally remains. In some cases, skin care treatments can further improve the appearance of the spot.
If the mole is flat, or if melanoma is suspected, an excision biopsy will be required. After anesthesia is administered, the entire mole is removed and sent to a lab for examination. The mole removal wound is sutured and usually results in only a thin scar, though this varies depending on the amount of tissue removed. Mole removal patients benefit from superior care throughout the process, and cosmetic treatments, including dermal fillers, are offered to address any aesthetic effects of mole removal.
Scar Revision
Scar tissue is a part of the body's normal healing process, and scars can never be removed completely. However, it is possible to dramatically reduce the appearance of scars through scar revision. Generally, surgical scar revision works best on scars that are large, prominent, or have healed poorly.
Many different surgical scar revision techniques are available at our practice to treat different types of scars. Generally speaking, surgical scar revision involves removing the scar tissue and joining the healthy surrounding skin in a less conspicuous way. In some cases, scars can be concealed in natural folds of the skin to make them less obvious. Zig-zag incisions can make a scar harder to see. Wide scars can be made narrower, raised scars can be lowered, and long scars can be shortened during scar revision surgery.
At The Landings Surgical Centre, we use a specialized treatment known as punch grafting to treat deep acne scars. The technique involves punching a small hole in the skin to remove the scar tissue, then transplanting healthy new skin taken from elsewhere on the body. Skin care treatments such as dermabrasion and chemical peel can also be used to treat some acne scars.
