View On GoogleWhat Is Hyaluronic Acid? The Science Behind Fillers
/
Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the body. It is essential for binding water to collagen in the skin. This gives the skin a healthy, fuller, more hydrated appearance. It's no wonder that hyaluronic acid is used in so many different kinds of dermal fillers.
Teosyal
TEOSYAL has become one of our most popular hyaluronic acid facial fillers. TEOSYAL achieves dramatic results while allowing the patient to maintain dynamic facial expressions when smiling and talking. That means more natural-looking outcomes than some other options.
The TEOSYAL line of injectables includes deep fillers such as TEOSYAL GLOBAL ACTION for deep injection and volumization, and the TEOSYAL RHA line that can treat deep wrinkles while also achieving cheek and lip augmentation. There is also TEOSYAL PURESENSE REDENSITY 1 & 2, which rehydrates the face and neck, and can be used for under-eye correction and tear trough treatment.
How Long Do TEOSYAL Injections Last?
While duration varies from patient to patient based on the injection site, the results of TEOSYAL treatments can last up to 22 months.
JUVÉDERM
JUVÉDERM can fill in lines, creases, and wrinkles for an improved, rejuvenated appearance. Like other dermal fillers we offer, it utilizes hyaluronic acid to replenish moisture and add volume to the skin. JUVÉDERM treatment can generally be performed in as little as 15 to 60 minutes depending on the areas that are treated, and it can be used in combination with BOTOX Cosmetic for a dramatic non-surgical makeover.
The latest JUVÉDERM line of injectables can treat wrinkles and enhance the volume of the lips, cheeks, and other parts of the face. These products include:
- JUVÉDERM VOLUMA™ XC
- JUVÉDERM VOLLURE™ XC
- JUVÉDERM Ultra XC
- JUVÉDERM Ultra Plus XC
- JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA™ XC
How Long Do
JUVÉDERM Injections Last?
Durations can vary based on the type of JUVÉDERM product used and the injection site. When adding volume to the cheeks, results can last up to two years before retreatment. For other areas of the face, results can last for a year to 18 months.

Restylane
Restylane is one of the most popular injectable products on the market, and with good reason. This long-lasting synthetic gel is extremely safe, amazingly flexible, and undeniably effective. We use Restylane injections to fill wrinkles and lines, and to augment the lips without incisions or the use of facial implants.
Restylane is composed of synthetically derived hyaluronic acid. It is not animal-based and presents a very low risk of allergic reaction. The treatment process takes about an hour from start to finish. As with other dermal fillers, Restylane patients can typically return to their normal activities immediately after the injections are over. Most people only experience some mild, temporary redness after treatment.
How Long Do Restylane Injections Last?
The duration of Restylane results depends on the injection site.
- The results of nasolabial fold injections last up to 18 months
- The results of lip augmentation and vertical lip line treatment last up to 6 months
- The results of cheek enhancement last up to 12 months
- The results for other facial lines and wrinkles last 6 months or longer
Perlane
Perlane is a hyaluronic acid gel filler. It is similar to Restylane, but is more concentrated. The higher concentration makes Perlane an appropriate filler option for treating deeper folds and wrinkles of the face. Perlane is also used to augment the lips, chin, and cheeks, or to fill the deep creases along the nose known as nasolabial folds.
How Long Do Perlane Injections Last?
Though the duration of Perlane results can vary, they typically last for six to nine months.
Perlane-L
/
Perlane-L was a type of Perlane that also contained lidocaine, a type of local anesthetic that helped numb the injection site and reduce discomfort. In 2015, Perlane-L was rebranded as Restylane Lyft.
Which Option is Right For Me?
During your consultation at our Halifax, Nova Scotia practice, Dr. Boileau or Dr. Bendor-Samuel will discuss your cosmetic goals and assess your current needs. They will discuss potential injectables and answer any questions you may have so you can make an informed decision about your options.
Bellafill
Previously known as ArteFill® and Artecoll®, Bellafill is a long-lasting dermal filler. Rather than hyaluronic acid, Bellafill contains polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) microspheres that are suspended in a mixture of collagen and anesthetic, the latter of which helps ease the injection process.
Once injected, the tiny PMMA microspheres stimulate the skin to produce its own natural collagen fibers. As more collagen is produced using the microspheres as a scaffold, it helps smooth away wrinkles and other blemishes. Patients should notice the results of Bellafill treatment within three months.
How Long Do Bellafill Injections Last?
Bellafill lasts longer than hyaluronic acid-based fillers thanks to the PMMA microspheres. On average, Bellafill treatment can last up to five years.
Sculptra
Sculptra is often called the "liquid facelift." It contains injectable poly-L-lactic acid, a biologically inert chemical that promotes collagen growth in the skin. This helps promote greater facial fullness and suppleness. It is one of the safest dermal fillers available, and can achieve dramatic, natural-looking results.
Sculptra is appropriate for filling lines and wrinkles as well as treating facial wasting. It is particularly helpful in treating facial lipoatrophy, which is the loss of fat tissue from the face sometimes associated with HIV and AIDS. Treatment takes about 30 minutes, and the results of Sculptra treatment develop over a few weeks.
How Long Do Sculptra Injections Last?
While the duration of Sculptra results can vary from patient to patient, many people experience the benefits of treatment for up to two years.
What about BOTOX Cosmetic? Are BOTOX Injections a Type of Filler?
Different from Dermal Fillers
BOTOX® Cosmetic is another injectable treatment that can treat facial wrinkles. However, it works differently from fillers.
Fillers add volume to the injection site, but BOTOX Cosmetic stops muscle contractions in the injection site. Halting muscle movements prevents the appearance of dynamic wrinkles throughout the face.
A Popular Plastic Surgery Alternative
BOTOX Cosmetic is the most popular injectable treatment available today. It provides anti-aging benefits that last for months. Additional BOTOX Cosmetic treatments can be performed to prolong the cosmetic benefits.
