Rejuvenate Your Appearance Using Fat Transfer
As we age, stubborn fatty deposits can accumulate in the abdomen, thighs, or love handles, while other areas lose fat and youthful volume. Fat transfer, performed by Nova Scotia plastic surgeon Richard Bendor-Samuel, can relocate fat harvested from one area to another that has lost volume due to age. Also known as fat grafting, a fat transfer can smooth facial wrinkles and add youthful volume without the need for artificial dermal fillers. Common Applications
Wrinkles and sunken areas around the eyes and mouth are are often treated with fat transfer. However, the face is not the only area that may occasionally require a pick-me-up. As you age, the back of your hands may lose volume, causing the skin to wrinkle and appear aged. Additionally, indentations left by scars and previous procedures can often be corrected with fat grafting.
Before being considered for a fat transfer, you will undergo a comprehensive evaluation. Our team will conduct a review of your medical history and current health status, along with a physical examination and a consultation to determine your goals and expectations.
The Fat Transfer Procedure
Depending on the amount of fat you need removed and transferred, Dr. Bendor-Samuel may recommend general anesthesia as well as local anesthesia. During the procedure, your doctor will harvest fat from a predetermined area of the body using liposuction techniques. In fact, many of our patients who initially choose to undergo liposuction choose to undergo fat transfer as well.
After enough fat is collected, the sample will be purified in a centrifuge to remove any impurities. Next, your surgeon will inject the harvested fat into the treatment area using tiny incisions in the skin. If you also require a face lift, Dr. Bendor-Samuel will almost certainly perform a fat grafting procedure at the same times the facelift because fat transfer will maximize the results while minimizing the overall cost of your treatment.
Benefits of a Natural Filler
As a natural substance produced by your own body, fat is one the most well-tolerated fillers available, outperforming most alternative artificial injectables. As a natural alternative, fat transfers last considerably longer than artificial fillers, and some patients believe they produce more natural-looking results. A fat transfer also requires a minimal amount of fat, generally involves less discomfort, and can be used to add volume to the eyes, nose, lips, and virtually any other area that requires more volume. During your initial consultation, you and our doctors can determine a fat transfer strategy that will help you achieve the enhancements you desire.
