Tell Me About Dermabrasion
Dermabrasion is a skin care treatment designed to reduce signs of aging, acne, scars, unwanted hair, and environmental damage on your facial skin. The treatment involves applying a motorized device with an abrasive surface to your face to remove the outer layer of skin.
In a way, your surgeon is "sanding" your skin, which is why dermabrasion is often called skin resurfacing. As the outer, or surface layer, of new skin begins to heal and grow back, it is usually much smoother and shows fewer dermatological flaws than before the procedure.
Both women and men seeking a smoother, more youthful-looking facial appearance can receive dermabrasion treatments from our clinical skin care therapist and board-certified plastic surgeons at The Landings Surgical Centre in Halifax, NS.

Is Dermabrasion
for Everyone?
/
Our plastic surgeons may not recommend this procedure for patients with darker skin, as it can cause discoloration as new skin grows back. Patients with fair skin are the best candidates for this treatment.
The Dermabrasion Procedure What to Expect During Your Appointment
If your surgeon determines that dermabrasion is an effective way to reduce the appearance of acne scars, aging, sun damage, scars, or other skin flaws, your procedure will involve:
Dermabrasion can take a few minutes to an hour to complete, depending on your skin concerns.
Side Effects and Recovery
Scarring, swelling, redness, itching, increased sensitivity to sunlight, tiny cysts (known as milia), and changes in skin color are possible side effects.
However, our highly skilled surgeons and clinical skin care therapist take every precaution to avoid these risks, and many are only temporary. After dermabrasion, it will take about 7-14 days to resume normal activities. Avoid swimming in chlorinated water and playing strenuous sports to protect your skin as it heals.
It's best to stay out of the sun for a few weeks, even after any lingering pinkness has faded. Use sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher when outdoors and a wide-brimmed hat for extra protection.
Don't take ibuprofen or aspirin for a week or drink alcohol for 48 hours following your procedure. If you are a smoker, you are advised to stop immediately, since nicotine can accelerate the development of wrinkles and other signs of aging. Tobacco can also inhibit healing after dermabrasion.
Combining Dermabrasion and Facelift Surgery
Patients who wish to achieve more extensive results can combine dermabrasion with facelift surgery. Based on their years of knowledge and expertise, Drs. Bendor-Samuel and Boileau have discovered that combining dermabrasion with facelift surgery can provide a 60 percent improvement in wrinkles, scarring, and age spots. During a consultation, your doctor can determine which procedure or combination of procedures can provide the results you desire.
Dermabrasion vs. Microdermabrasion
While dermabrasion uses a wire brush or a diamond wheel with rough edges to remove the uneven outermost layer of skin, microdermabrasion uses a stream of air that contains thousands of small particles.
Dermabrasion and microdermabrasion are similar procedures that reduce the appearance of scarring, acne, wrinkles, and more. However, dermabrasion removes more layers of skin than microdermabrasion, and therefore can be a more effective treatment than microdermabrasion. Our plastic surgeons and clinical skin care therapist will help you explore your options and determine the best treatment for your goals.
