What Happens during Breast Reduction Surgery?
There are several ways that your doctor can perform breast reduction surgery. The right technique for you will depend on your body type and the amount of skin to be removed. The anchor incision pattern is the most common method. Dr. Bendor-Samuel or Dr. Boileau will create an incision along your breast crease. Another will run up to your areola. Alternatively, your doctor could make a “lollipop-shaped” incision around your areola and down to your breast crease.
Through the incisions, Dr. Bendor-Samuel or Dr. Boileau will trim away extra tissue and fat. In some cases, liposuction alone may achieve the desired results. If you have stretched or overly large areolas, the doctor will also remove extra skin from their circumference. He will also raise your nipples, as needed. Finally, he will close the incisions with careful techniques for minimal scarring. The nipples stay attached to you at all times so sensation is usually maintained.

Insured vs. Uninsured Breast Reduction
Because women undergo breast reduction for a variety of reasons, Canadian insurance companies have established certain rules to determine which procedures are eligible for coverage. To undergo a breast reduction you must be healthy and not obese in order to limit post-operative complications. To obtain government MSI coverage in Nova Scotia the amount of tissue to be removed must total at least 400 grams removed per breast. As with any purely elective surgery, if you are over weight you many not be a candidate for surgery privately or as an MSI insured service. A surgeons role is to perform elective surgery in patients who will benefit with the least amount of complications. The incidence of complications in patients undergoing breast reduction steadily increases as the BMI increases above 27.
