Woman looking down with her new blepharoplasty procedure done

Blepharoplasty

One of the first things we notice about people is their eyes. The eyes are also one of the first facial features to show the signs of aging. Thanks to blepharoplasty, Drs. Richard Bendor-Samuel and Louis Boileau can enhance your eyes and your overall appearance. Learn why people come to see our board-certified plastic surgeons in Halifax who serve the Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island area.

Refresh and Enliven Your Eyes

Sagging Upper Eyelids

Over time, the skin of the upper eyelid may begin to droop or sag. This is part of the aging process, but it may leave you looking tired, angry, or sad. It can even lead to partially obscured vision.

Baggy Lower Eyelids

In addition to issues with the upper eyelid, people can develop baggy or puffy lower eyelids. These lower eyelid problems can similarly contribute to issues with facial aesthetics.

Treating a Tired Appearance

A blepharoplasty can address the problems caused by loose skin and puffy eyelids. The procedure can help you appear younger and more vibrant rather than fatigued.

Combining Other Procedures

Blepharoplasty can be performed alone or in conjunction with brow lift if patients also experience forehead lines or sagging of the eyebrows. Dermal filler injections and BOTOX® Cosmetic can also play a role in enhancement.

How Long Does a Blepharoplasty Last?

/

The benefits of a blepharoplasty can last for several years, and potentially longer. The exact duration of the results will depend on the type of surgery performed, your genetics, and other factors related to skin care and general wellness.

The Blepharoplasty Procedure Performing Upper and Lower Eyelid Surgery

During an initial consultation at our Halifax surgical centre, our plastic surgeons will assess your facial features and discuss your cosmetic goals. We can review any medical conditions that may prevent you from undergoing surgery, and review potential alternatives if you'd prefer a non-surgical approach to cosmetic enhancement.

Administering Anesthesia

Blepharoplasty is performed with the patient under general anesthesia. Local anesthetic is also administered to keep the surgery painless.

Upper Eyelid Surgery

During the upper eyelid surgery procedure, an incision is created to follow the contour within the natural fold of the upper eyelid. This helps conceal scarring after recovery. Excess skin and fat are removed for a more refreshed and alert appearance.

Lower Eyelid Surgery

There are two different approaches to lower eyelid surgery. One lower eyelid surgery technique involves an incision on the outside of the lower eyelid just below the eyelashes. The other technique, called transconjunctival lower blepharoplasty, involves creating an incision inside the lower eyelid to eliminate the appearance of scarring.

After the incision is made, excess muscle and fat are removed to smooth out bulges and reduce lower eyelid puffiness.

Recovering from Eyelid Surgery What Is the Healing Process Like?

Bruising and Swelling

Patients may experience some bruising and swelling after their eyelid surgery procedure, which should resolve within a week to 10 days. During this time, patients can use camouflage makeup to hide any discoloration.

Light Sensitivity

Some blepharoplasty patients may experience temporary sensitivity to light, dry eye, or excessive tearing. These side effects can be controlled with prescribed eye drops or by wearing dark sunglasses to protect the eyes from the wind and sun for a few days.

Allowing Scars to Fade

Incision lines on the upper eyelids should also fade over the next several months and become unnoticeable. Be sure to attend follow-up visits so we can monitor your progress.

Addressing Adverse Side Effects

/

Side effects such as bleeding, eye pain, and excessive swelling may be signs of an issue that requires urgent medical attention. If you notice any adverse side effects or have immediate concerns, you can contact us right away for assistance.

I had my appointmnet for Fillers and Botox and was blown away by how thorough the Nurse Injector was. We discussed the areas I was hoping to fix and she explained how in great depth we would achieve it. I was emailed an in-depth what to do afterwards. It has only been a week but I love the results so far. I don't know why I waited so long to seek out this treatment. Definitely the place to go if you are looking for great customer service and knowing you are in capable hands of a real surgical practice.
