Can Someone Be Too Young or Too Old for Rhinoplasty? By The Landings Surgical Centre on April 01, 2024

smiling womanRhinoplasty, commonly referred to as a nose job, is a plastic surgery that can dramatically enhance your appearance and improve nasal function. It is common among patients trying to correct unsatisfactory nose size, crookedness, or drooping nasal tips.

While this procedure is the solution to many issues, it is not ideal for everyone. In this short blog, we will discuss whether or not some HalifaxNova Scotia, patients may be too young or too old for rhinoplasty. We will also talk about other key candidacy factors.

Can You Be Too Young for Rhinoplasty?

Nose insecurity can start at a very young age. However, it is very important to wait to receive a rhinoplasty until your nose is fully developed.

For a typical female, the nose will be fully developed by the time they are 15 years old. A common age for the nose to be fully developed for a male is 18 years old. During an in-person consultation at our Halifax plastic surgery practice, we can assess whether or not your nose is ready for rhinoplasty.

The Same Applies to a Medical Rhinoplasty

Sometimes, a patient's motivation for rhinoplasty is more medical than cosmetic. This can be the case if you are looking to correct a deviated septum or other breathing problems.

It is recommended to wait to treat these issues with a nose job until your face has stopped growing. Receiving the procedure too early can elevate the risk that you would need a revision rhinoplasty later on. Therefore, patience can save you time and money.

What About Being Too Old for the Procedure?

There is no upper age limit for rhinoplasty. You can receive this life-changing cosmetic surgical procedure well into your golden years. However, the surgery is not recommended for patients suffering from certain medical conditions, and unfortunately, the prevalence of such medical conditions often rises with age.

One major factor we look at when planning a safe rhinoplasty is whether or not a potential patient has cardiac or pulmonary health issues. Depending on their severity, the presence of either of these can make the surgery too risky to carry out.

Other Key Candidacy Factors

To ensure the procedures we offer are as efficacious and safe as possible, we evaluate more candidacy factors than those already discussed. For example, we will look at your lifestyle, as some behaviors can increase the likelihood of surgical complications.

Notably, smoking cigarettes can harm candidacy because the nicotine in cigarettes restricts blood vessels, thereby lessening a smoker’s potential for healthy post-op healing. We will also gauge your overall health. Remember, our goal isn’t to disqualify patients. It is to make sure that all patients we take on are right for rhinoplasty.
