Improve Body Contours with Liposuction for the Thighs and Hips
There are parts of the figure that can be problem areas for many people. Two areas that tend to be a concern are the thighs and hips, because they often hold onto stubborn pockets of fat. Excess fat around the hips and thighs can create a disproportionate or displeasing figure.
At Landings Surgical Centre, our doctors offer liposuction for the thighs and hips. Liposuction eliminates excess fat to slim and tone treatment areas, and give patients the slimmer figure they desire. Our plastic surgeons are happy to help individuals in Halifax, NS, and Prince Edward Island, determine if liposuction is right for them.
Liposuction Candidates
Liposuction is a versatile procedure that is able to target specific areas of concern, so it is an ideal treatment for virtually any healthy adult who is struggling with stubborn pockets of fat. Liposuction of the hips and thighs is particularly well-suited for those with a pear shape, or those who have trouble finding clothes that fit properly, due to a disproportionate figure.
To achieve optimal results from liposuction, patients should be close to their ideal weight range and they should have good skin elasticity. These two factors are important, because, although liposuction can get rid of unwanted fat, it is not intended to be a weight loss procedure. Liposuction also does nothing to eliminate excess skin, so it is important that the skin maintains some elasticity and will shrink down to respond to the body’s new contours.
The Procedure
There are various liposuction techniques that may be used for treatment. At Landings Surgical Centre in Halifax, tumescent liposuction is the most frequently used technique. During a tumescent liposuction procedure, the treatment site is injected with a saline fluid. The fluid also contains an anesthetic. This liquid serves two purposes: it numbs the treatment site and it loosens up fat (which ultimately makes for a smoother procedure and minimal bleeding).
After the thighs and hips have been injected with the saline solution, treatment proceeds just like traditional liposuction. A series of small incisions are made around the treatment area. A thin, hollow tube (called a cannula) is inserted through these incisions. The cannula is moved in a back and forth motion to further break up fat deposits and then suction them from the body.
Liposuction Recovery
Following liposuction treatment, the most common side effects are discomfort and inflammation. Although swelling can prevent patients from seeing the full effects of treatment, they should see some immediate improvement in the shape of their hips and thighs. Usually pain and inflammation begin to dissipate within a few days, so that most people feel comfortable to resume work or other non-strenuous activities about one week after their procedure.
In the weeks following liposuction, swelling will continue to go down and comfort will improve. Patients are typically cleared to resume all physical activities, including exercise, about three to four weeks after treatment. Within four to six months after liposuction swelling should completely resolve so that patients see the full results of treatment.
Maintaining Liposuction Results
Fat that is removed during liposuction treatment is gone for good. However, new fat deposits can develop. If patients want to keep their hips and thighs looking trim, they should be sure to maintain an active lifestyle, eat a well-balanced diet, and minimize their consumption of “empty” calories, such as those from sweets and junk food.
