Sleeping Position After Breast Augmentation By The Landings Surgical Centre on January 29, 2020

A woman sleeping in bedThanks to breast augmentation surgery, women can have fuller curves and an enhanced bustline. The Landings Surgical Centre continues to perform breast augmentation on patients throughout the greater Halifax, NS and Prince Edward Island area, achieving excellent results.

Many patients ask Dr. Richard Bendor-Samuel and Dr. Louis Boileau about life after breast augmentation. Numerous activities can change with implants in place, which includes your sleeping habits. Let’s consider how breast implants affect your sleeping position. We’ll then recommend certain sleep positions that may be more ideal for breast augmentation patients.

Changes to Sleeping Habits When You Have Breast Implants

Breast implants can change the way you move your body. If you lead an active lifestyle, you’ll notice this while you work out or play sports. Even at rest, you may have to change the way you move your body given the realities of having implants.

You may have enjoyed sleeping a certain way before getting breast implants, but that could change once you’ve got implants in place, especially in the early stages of recovery.

Ideal Sleeping Position When Recovering from Surgery

As patients are healing from breast augmentation surgery, it’s best that they sleep on their backs while wearing a surgical bra. Having a few pillows to slightly prop your body up so you’re not totally flat on your back tends to be best.

Sleeping this way allows the breasts to heal in a neutral, balanced position without excessive tugging at incision sites. The surgical bra keeps the breasts supported and even, which can improve the final results of surgery once patients have made a full recovery.

Sleeping on Your Back After You’ve Fully Healed

Once patients are fully healed, sleeping on the backs remains the most ideal sleeping position. The breasts have weight evenly distributed, which prevents sagging and asymmetry in the long run. It also avoids discomfort from pressure against the breasts or gravity pulling on the breasts overnight.

Sleeping on Your Side After You’ve Fully Healed

It’s also possible for breast augmentation patients to sleep on their sides after they’ve fully healed so long as it’s comfortable. It may be helpful to wear a sports bra or other supportive undergarment as you sleep in order to prevent breast asymmetry in the long run. Having a spare pillow to rest your breasts on may also be a good idea.

Can I Sleep on My Stomach with Breast Implants?

Once you’re fully healed, breast augmentation patients can sleep on their stomachs again. The primary concern here is how it makes your body feel. If it’s comfortable for you to sleep on your stomach, feel free to do so. If sleeping on your stomach is painful to your breasts and implants, you shouldn’t do it.

You may want to discuss these matters with us if you are a stomach sleeper and are worried about breast implants causing changes in your sleeping habits and sleep pattern. We can offer greater insight when speaking with you in person.
