Candidates for Tummy Tuck after Weight Loss

If you lead a healthy lifestyle and have lost significant weight, you may be a candidate for tummy tuck. In addition, candidates for tummy tuck should be in good overall health and not smoke.

It is also important that patients be close to their ideal weight, as tummy tuck surgery does not result in weight loss, rather it is a body contouring procedure.

The Tummy Tuck Procedure

Our surgeons can perform a tummy tuck on patients that have excess skin above and below the belly button. The procedure is usually performed as an outpatient procedure. We may use local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia.

An incision is made just above the pubic bone and another is made around the navel. The skin is lifted from the abdominal wall, giving the surgeon access to the musculature.

These muscles are tightened for a flatter midsection. Next, excess skin is removed.

Patients may combine this procedure with liposuction for fat removal.

Finally, the navel is repositioned, the skin is stretched and smoothed, and the incisions are sutured together.

Recovering from Tummy Tuck

Most patients will be discharged with compression dressing, which aids in the recovery process and also helps deliver exceptional aesthetic outcomes.

Most patients will need to rest for several days after their procedure, and they will take about a week off from work.

Other activities will slowly be added in per your surgeon’s directions, with most patients making a full recovery in about three to four weeks.

Combining Surgeries for Dynamic Results

Patients that have lost a significant amount of weight may have excess skin on other areas of the body. Our surgeons can combine your tummy tuck with other body contouring procedures:

  • Thigh lift: Loose and wrinkled skin on the upper thighs can cause uncomfortable chafing, and detract from your overall physical appearance. A thigh lift is designed to slim the thighs and remove excess skin.
  • Breast Lift: Many women who have gained and lost weight have sagging breasts. A breast lift is the standard procedure to improve the position of the breasts and nipple-areola complex.
