The Many Perlane Benefits Far Outweigh the Risks By The Landings Surgical Centre on March 25, 2018

Patients who want to restore natural beauty to their faces without having cosmetic surgery might benefit from an injectable cosmetic dermal filler called Perlane®. Dr. Richard Bendor-Samuel and Dr. Louis Boileau, of The Landings Surgical Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, are among the many cosmetic surgeons worldwide who routinely treat their patients with this product. They are highly experienced doctors who want their patients to know more about the many Perlane benefits and how this treatment can help them regain their youthful appearance.

Years of exposure to ultraviolet rays and other environmental irritants can result in decreased amounts of hyaluronic acid (HA) in the skin. This important substance absorbs more than a thousand times its weight in water, so it serves to keep the skin moist. It also plays an important role in maintaining facial elasticity and an overall youthful appearance. When it is lacking, facial folds and wrinkles appear, and these can make patients appear older.

Because HA is so important to healthy skin, plastic and cosmetic surgeons routinely use injectable skin fillers containing the substance. It helps to smooth facial folds and wrinkles, improve contours, and augment areas such as the chin, cheeks, and lips. These treatments, which include Juvederm®, Restylane®, Teosyal®, as well as Perlane, have proven so effective, especially when combined with other skin care treatments, that they often preclude the need for plastic surgery procedures altogether.

After Perlane is injected, it adds volume to sagging skin and moisturizes it. Since it is biodegradable, its effects are not permanent. The body eventually absorbs all the hyaluronic acid, but the improved skin texture and appearance normally last for six to nine months.

What is Different About Perlane?

Perlane has larger particles and a higher concentration of HA than some of the other fillers, such as Restylane. This increases its effectiveness in treating more severe folds and wrinkles, including those that occur near the nose, called nasolabial folds. It is also more effective for procedures performed to increase facial volume.

Perlane can be used for a wide variety of facial conditions, including:

  • Wrinkles, folds, and lines of all types that can occur throughout the face
  • Augmentation of lips, chin, cheeks, and facial depressions
  • Scarring from acne and other types of injuries
  • Virtually any other facial areas in need of augmentation, softening, or smoothing

Perlane treatment can be accomplished in less than an hour. The results are immediate, and they remain for six to nine months, at which time, the treatment can be repeated. The side effects of a Perlane treatment are typically mild. They include discomfort, tenderness, itching, swelling, and bruising, which can last for a day or two after the procedure. However, using Perlane in conjunction with BOTOX® Cosmetic will slightly alter the procedure time and post-operative results.
