Arm Lift Surgical Options By The Landings Surgical Centre on January 04, 2013

New Brunswick Arm Lift TechniquesAt the Landings Surgical Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia, we work with patients to help them achieve their desired aesthetic results without dramatically altering their appearance. For many of our patients from Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island, small enhancements are all that is needed to improve their self esteem and leave them feeling confident in their appearance. One area of the body that can be a frustration for both our male and female patients is the lower arm area. This is an area of the body where fat and excess skin is likely to accumulate for many of our patients in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Plastic surgeons Richard Bendor-Samuel and Louis Boileau, of The Landings Surgical Centre can perform arm lift surgery to tighten the skin that hangs down from the upper arm.

Arm Lift Techniques

When patients come to our surgeons for arm lift surgery, we want to produce optimal results. We will formulate a surgical plan and choose the best technique after a thorough consultation and exam. There are typically two techniques to consider when our patients wish to tighten and tone their upper arms.

  • Liposuction: For many of our patients in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, liposuction is often performed in combination with arm lift surgery. Liposuction removes excess fat, while arm lift surgery removes excess skin. During liposuction, our surgeons will make a series of small incisions to allow access to fat and tissue inside the arm. We then use a medical vacuum to remove this excessive fat. Often, the patients who respond best to liposuction are those who still have good elasticity in their skin. If a patient is generally fit and in good shape, liposuction may be the only technique that is required to give them their desired results.
  • Traditional arm lift: Many patients who require arm lift surgery are 40 years old or older and have lost a lot of skin elasticity. For these patients, a traditional arm lift will be necessary to maximize surgical results. While a traditional arm lift may include liposuction, an incision will also need to be made. In these cases, the surgeon will make an incision that extends from the upper arm down to the elbow. This incision will be strategically placed on the underside of the arm so that the resulting scar will sit against the body when your arms are resting naturally. With this incision, our surgeon can trim skin and fat to tone the upper arm.

Age, genetics, the amount of fat and skin, and the skin’s elasticity are all factors that will determine which arm lift technique will give a patient optimal results. Our surgeons will discuss these factors with you and advise you on the most appropriate technique to be used during your arm lift procedure.
